APART FROM YOU, WHO ARE YOUR BIG TIPS TO MAKE IT BIG IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS?
"Y’know, there are some original and brilliant bands out there, and it’s such a shame that they’re tied up in a scene that’s so full of wannabe tripe. Cork, Nicky’s hometown, is producing some great great bands at the moment. There’s a group of lads called Azis who are fantastic, as well as five good friends of ours called 2Xtreme, who definitely have a future in this business. Dublin has some class acts too – Diverse are probably the most original and entertaining live band I’ve ever seen, and Mark from the band’s been a good mate over the last few years; I really think Dove will be massive, and, as I’m sure I’ve said before, Mytown are just da bomb! On my side of the Atlantic, there’s a great band called Off Limits who really have to potential to make it huge (G – I’m proud of ya dude!), and Act V are making some line-up changes, but they’re great lads, and should make it big. The thing about all these bands though is that they’re not only great performers, but they’re really cool people too! Pop music gets a very hard time, but there’s a lot of genuine talent out there… you just have to dig through all the crap to find it!"
WHEN IS YOUR NEXT CONCERT IN IRELAND?
- Kaz, by e-mail
"I know it's been a bit quiet since our launch, but we're busy working out all the behind-the-scenes stuff. We're not sure of the dates yet, but we're currently selecting between three and five high-profile gigs that we'll perform in Dublin, before we begin touring in the summer. I'm sure that all the info on the shows will be popped up on the website, so just keep checking in! Thanks to everyone for waiting so patiently... we promise it'll be worth it!".
HOW DO I STOP THE ADS COMING UP EVERY TIME I DO ANYTHING ON THIS SITE
- Shelly, Birmingham
CARTEL ONLINE SAYS:
"One tip we can give you is to NOT close them down, 'cause then they'll pop up every time you open a new page. Instead, just minimise them (or just click on the page behind them) and they'll drop to the bottom of the screen, and not bother you for the rest of your visit. The pop-up ads are part of the way we support the site, so they're here to stay, we're afraid. We do try to put up ads that are helpful and useful to you (for example, the American Greetings ad at the bottom of the home page offers you a chance to send free cards online - no strings attatched!) so please support our sponsors as much as you can - It's the way we stay in business".
ARE YOU A DUBLIN BAND OR A CORK BAND OR A CANADA BAND OR WHAT? P.S. UP CORK!!!!
Pamela Cooney, Cork
"Well, we’re definitely not Canadian since that’s just Tim. We don’t really put ourselves down as an anything band, because we all come from such different backgrounds, but if it did come down to it I think we’d probably be more Cork than Dublin, even though we’d spend more time up here! I don’t know really. We’re just Cartel! There’s no, like, geographic location or anything. We just do our thing. I think we can all be pretty much at home anywhere, so I suppose we’re a DubCorCal band. Or something".
I REALLY NEED TO KNOW IF I CAN GET A COPY OF THE 'CARTEL: LIVE IN CONCERT, DUBLIN 1998' VIDEO SOMEWHERE
Svenja , by e-mail
"The video in question was a kinda fans-eye-view idea we had, which was basically going to be a compilation of footage of us on stage, in rehearsal, and just being ourselves. We kinda developed the idea in May ’98, and Bri left the band that June, so it only really got to the pre-production stage. At the moment though, with the new line-up, we’re having a documentary crew follow us everywhere for the next year, and we’re building up a pretty big vault of footage, so the finished video is gonna be rapid. We’ve hooked up with a guy called Robbie Dore, a great independent videographer from Dublin, who’s overseeing the project for us. I mean, we’re at least a year away from any possible release at this stage, but I’m really psyched about it. As for any other original footage of Brian, myself and Dar, I know there are camcorder videos floating around, and we may include some clips on a future longform video, but we’ve no plans to officially release the original video ourselves."
DO ANY OF CARTEL HAVE CHILDREN?
Jen , by e-mail
I WAS JUST WONDERING WHERE I COULD GET CARTEL MUSIC ON THE SITE BECAUSE I CAN'T FIND IT AND WE ARE CARTEL DEPRIVED HERE IN THE US OF A?
Sandi, Utah, USA
CARTEL ONLINE SAYS:
"I know it seems a bit weird that we operate such an extensive website, but with no sound files. It’s something we’ve seriously looked into, but because of the lack of clear copyright law on the internet, our legal advisers suggested we hold off until Cartel have the cover of a secure publishing deal. There’s apparently already bootleg clips of ‘Hard To Get’ and ‘When The Love Runs Out’ available to download illegally somewhere, so we’re being very careful not to get ourselves in a situation where the boys get more of their original material ripped off. Cartel have worked hard developing a very catchy and unique sound, and I know it seems like a long wait, but this is something they just have to do the right way. We’re working on it though, and there should be some samples coming onto the site later in the year, so keep checking back"
DO YOU JUST MAKE UP THE QUESTIONS FOR CARTEL?
Jen , by e-mail
CARTEL ONLINE SAYS:
"I think the fact that your question is printed here answers that one Jen!"
WHY ARE TIM AND DARRAGH'S NAMES SPELT WRONG ON THE WESTLIFE ALBUM BOOKLET?
Aisling Rourke, Arklow, Ireland
"It was just a mix-up in the BMG offices, as far as I'm aware. Bri rang me and Tim the week before it came out, just to warn us that the sleeve would say thanks to 'Jim and Dorragh', and that it wasn't his fault. It's really not that big a deal... I mean, it's nice to be thanked, but he's put us in his thank yous a good few times before, and to be honest, it's the friendship that matters most to all of us anyway!!!"
